Printer / Router 'Driver Support' Scam
You search for printer or router help and land on a fake 'support' site or number that charges you and takes remote control of your computer.
Think a message like this reached you? You can check it right now.
What this scam is
When people search for driver downloads or printer/router setup help, scammers buy ads and post fake support numbers that look official. A 'technician' offers to fix your device, then talks you into installing remote-access software and paying by gift card or card for a bogus 'service plan.' Once connected, they can plant real malware or open your accounts. Genuine manufacturers provide drivers free from their official sites.
What it usually looks like
- A top search result or ad promising instant printer/router 'support.'
- A phone number for a 'certified technician.'
- A request to install a remote-access tool to 'fix drivers.'
- A charge for a support plan, often via gift card.
Common warning signs
- Paid support numbers for free manufacturer drivers.
- Being asked to install remote-access software.
- Payment by gift card for tech help.
- Pressure and scare talk about your device.
Example wording scammers use
“Printer driver corrupted! Call our certified support line now to restore your device.”
“I'll fix your router remotely — just install this tool and purchase a $199 support plan.”
